Join Myra Su, longtime Rough House collaborator, and make a crankie!
Crankie is a form of puppet storytelling told through a mechanical box and an illustrated scroll crank, creating an animated picture book! This versatile medium is great for puppeteers, with both the option to scale very small or very large. In this workshop, you'll build your very own crankie out of cardboard and make shadow puppets to accompany it. You will also learn pointers on scroll composition and layout to make the most out of the unique storytelling opportunities that the crankie offers.
All materials included!

Myra Su is a puppetry artist who plays with integrating analog puppets and digital technology. When working with crankie, she's interested in modernizing the form with visual techniques found in cinema, comics/manga, and murals. Her piece, INKED, is a crankie that combines digital video with live ink painting. In addition to her independent work, Myra is a touring puppeteer and builder with Manual Cinema. Myra also co-curates Nasty, Brutish & Short with Rough House Theater Co, a puppet cabaret that takes place six times a year.
